ATLANTA, (February 4, 2014) - The Atlanta Opera announced today its 2014-2015 season, the first planned by new General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun. The season will feature three new productions, a Southeastern premiere, and a Choral Silver Celebration. The mainstage season at Cobb Energy Centre will feature a new co-production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, a new of Verdi’s Rigoletto, and a revival of Mozart’s popular The Marriage of Figaro. In addition to the Choral Silver Celebration which will have performances at Emory University and Kennesaw State University, the season will include the Southeastern premiere of American composer Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers at The Alliance Theatre.

“I am especially excited to introduce this season, because it represents the foundation of our vision for the future of opera in Atlanta,” says General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun. “We have great plans to expand the repertoire with fresh interpretations of well-loved masterpieces co-produced with leading opera companies from around the country and new works created in collaboration with key Atlanta arts organizations. Most importantly, we will attract to Atlanta leading singers, conductors, directors and designers from around the world.”

Choral Silver Celebration

In celebration of Chorus Master Walter Huff’s 25th anniversary year with The Atlanta Opera, the 2014-2015 season will open in September with three concerts of choral masterpieces featuring works that span across 300 years of the operatic repertoire. The Choral Silver Celebration concerts will take place on September 12 at 8 p.m. and September 14 at 3 p.m. at Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. A final performance will be on September 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Kennesaw State University’s Bailey Performance Center. Spotlighting The Atlanta Opera Chorus, the Choral Silver Celebration will highlight Huff’s unparalleled work with Atlanta’s internationally acclaimed opera chorus.

Mainstage Season at Cobb Energy Centre

The mainstage season at the Cobb Energy Centre will open on November 8 with an innovative new interpretation of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with additional performances on November 11, 14 and 16. Utilizing the same creative team as the Atlanta Opera’s Lucia di Lammermoor in 2011, Madama Butterfly will feature projections and other new elements combined with a set from New Orleans Opera. General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun will direct a cast of debuting singers including soprano Dina Kuznetsova in her North American debut in the title role. Additional cast members will include tenor Adam Diegel as Pinkerton, mezzo-soprano Nina Yoshida Nelsen as Suzuki, and baritone Corey McKern as Sharpless. Atlanta Opera Music Director Arthur Fagen will conduct The Atlanta Opera Orchestra.

The second opera in the Atlanta Opera’s 2014-2015 mainstage season at the Cobb Energy Centre will be Verdi’s Rigoletto, in a new co-production with Boston Lyric Opera and Opera Omaha. Rigoletto performances will be on February 28, March 3, 6 and 8, 2015. Not seen on the Atlanta Opera stage since 2000, this production of Rigoletto will be developed by General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun. The concept will explore Rigoletto’s psyche in the violent world that surrounds him. Sets for Rigoletto will be designed by renowned American set designer John Conklin, while costumes will be designed by Vita Tzykun, known in popular culture circles for her production design of Lady Gaga’s 2011 Thanksgiving special. The cast for Rigoletto will include renowned Verdi baritone Todd Thomas singing the title role of the court jester, rising American soprano Nadine Sierra as his daughter, Gilda, and Atlantan Morris Robinson as Sparafucile. Joseph Rescigno, who last conducted The Atlanta Opera Orchestra in last season’s La traviata, will conduct.

The final opera in the Atlanta Opera’s mainstage season at the Cobb Energy Centre will be a revival production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro on April 4, 7, 10 and 12, 2015. The Atlanta Opera’s Music Director Arthur Fagen will return to conduct this opera, and Georgia native Tara Faircloth will stage direct. The Marriage of Figaro cast of rising stars will feature bass-baritone Craig Colclough making his Atlanta Opera and role debut as Figaro, soprano Lauren Snouffer singing Susanna, and Irish mezzo-soprano Naomi O’Connell singing the pants role of Cherubino. Count and Countess Almaviva will be sung by baritone John Moore and soprano Katie Van Kooten. The sets and costumes for The Marriage of Figaro were designed by Susan Benson originally for The Banff Centre.

All operas will be performed in their original language with projected English translations, and will feature The Atlanta Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

Three Decembers

The Atlanta Opera’s 2014-2015 season will close with the Southeastern premiere of the chamber opera called Three Decembers by leading American composer, Jake Heggie. In a new Atlanta Opera production, Three Decembers will be presented on May 29, 30, and 31, 2015 at The Alliance Theatre. Based on an unpublished play by Terrence McNally with a libretto by Gene Scheer, Three Decembers features three singers and an 11-member musical ensemble. It tells the story of Madeline, a fading Broadway actress, and her two children, Charlie and Beatrice. Their dysfunctional family struggles and a long-delayed secret revelation draw the audience into their emotional angst and make for a gripping theatrical experience.

The creative team and cast for Three Decembers will be announced at a later date.
