Finance & Business Administration Internship
Beginning Spring 2016

About The Atlanta Opera
The Atlanta Opera is one of the finest regional opera companies in the nation. The Opera currently presents three mainstage productions at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and two productions at satellite theaters as part of the Discoveries Series. Atlanta has a strong history of opera, dating back to the early 1900’s when the Metropolitan Opera’s annual tour was a major social event. The Atlanta Opera was founded in 1979 and to this day adheres to its mission to enrich lives through opera.

Internship Description
The finance and business administration intern will gain hands on experience with the management of a well-respected professional opera company. This internship will enable the student to observe a range of management decisions encountered day to day in the interesting and fast-paced environment of a non-profit business. This opportunity provides mentoring from the CFO and the student will work closely in assisting with a variety of necessary and important management activities, primarily in financial analysis, reporting, and accounting. The intern will also be encouraged to attend performances and special events furthering the ability for cultural advancement and professional networking.

Learning Objectives
  • At the end of the internship the student should be able to: 
  • Understand the relationship between accounting and finance functions that influence the execution of financial reporting by participating in monthly close activities. 
  • Prepare financial statements and assess the presentation of these statements to different stakeholders including management, board members, and funders. 
  • Analyze the organization’s financial performance as compared with its peers and provide an assessment on the current position of the organization.
  • Identify staff and program capacity trends across the industry and develop a comparative report with recommendations for the organization.

Program Details
This internship program is 12 weeks long and requires a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week. This is an unpaid internship open to undergraduate students (junior year and above) and graduate students, and early career professionals. Academic credit can be awarded based on school guidelines.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited academic program or have a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or finance. The learning objectives of this program require a pre-requisite experience in the fundamentals of accounting and financial statement analysis. Strong excel skills are needed to participate in many of the projects. The candidate should be technology savvy with the ability and interest in learning how to utilize accounting and reporting software. Candidate should be interested in understanding the challenges of non-profit accounting and have an interest in pursuing a career in the non-profit sector.

Production Internship

The Atlanta Opera is looking for a talented production intern!

This internship program is 12 weeks long and requires a commitment of 15 hours per week. This is an unpaid internship open to undergraduate and graduate students, and early career professionals. Academic credit can be awarded based on school guidelines.

Minimum Requirements
Strong writing skills are needed to participate in many projects. Candidate should be tech and production savvy. Candidate should be interested in understanding the challenges of working in the non-profit arts world.

Marketing & Communications Internship

The Atlanta Opera is looking for a talented marketing intern. The intern will work extensively in social media, digital marketing, market research, our Young Professionals endeavor and event management. This opportunity provides mentoring from the Director of Marketing and Associate Director of Marketing. The intern will be encouraged to attend events furthering their cultural advancement and professional networking. The student should be ready to work hard and prepared to ask questions.
 
Learning Objectives
At the end of the internship the student should be able to:
  • Think strategically about marketing communications in achieving overall business goals
  • Articulate multi-platform campaigns across social media, traditional advertising and events
  • Prepare research findings to inform key decisions makers
  • Analyze insights from campaigns - then implement and optimize
  • Outline an event plan, play a role in production, and confidently execute

Strong writing skills are needed to participate in many projects. Candidate should be tech savvy with interest in social media and digital. Candidate should have a working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Candidate should be interested in understanding the challenges of non-profit arts marketing.

Graphic Design / Creative Internship

The Atlanta Opera was founded in 1979 and to this day adheres to its mission to enrich lives through opera.
 
The Atlanta Opera is looking for a talented graphic design intern. The intern will work extensively in design, ad design/sizing, planning meetings, print, and e-marketing. This opportunity provides mentoring from the Creative Services Manager. The student should be knowledgeable in design basics and have a good and working understanding of advertising and marketing. The student should be ready to work hard and prepared to ask questions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the internship the student should be able to:
  • Create/build new designs for print/web ads and graphics
  • Rework existing designs for different media outlets
  • Participate in creative and brainstorming meetings
  • Work within e-marketing platforms

Portfolio of work will be requested at the time of an interview.

Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited academic program or have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. Strong writing skills are needed to participate in many projects. Candidate should be tech savvy with a strong working knowledge of Creative Suite and its programs, with a good understanding of ad design and marketing. Candidate should be interested in understanding the challenges of non-profit arts marketing. Candidate must provide his/her own software and computer.
