FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

One of the core missions of The Atlanta Opera is to provide education and outreach opportunities for students of all ages. Below are some of our programs available for young people. Please visit often for updates on outreach programs that will be added throughout the season as well as instructional tools and resources for parents and teachers.

Student Shorts

These fully-staged and abbreviated versions of our mainstage productions provide students an opportunity to attend a live opera performance. Parents and educators are provided with an Opera Guide including information, activities and lesson plans that correlate directly with the Georgia Performance Standards.

In cold and snowy Paris, six young struggling artists are full of idealism, beauty and unbridled love. The tragic love story of Rodolfo and Mimì, along with fellow bohemians Marcello, Colline, Schaunard and Musetta, is the second most frequently performed opera in North America. Students will enjoy some of opera’s most famous music in this abridged version of the work. Performed in Italian with English supertitles.

55 minutes; taken from the full production and performed with full sets, costumes and lighting, and accompanied by The Atlanta Opera Orchestra.

The struggling folks on Catfish Row live a life of hard work and tough time in this American opera classic. Porgy loves Bess who is, at the start, in a relationship with the abusive criminal Crown. A series of tragic events happen, including a murder and hurricane, before Bess flees to New York in search of a new life. Audiences will recognize well-known tunes such as “Summertime,” “I got plenty o’ nuttin,’” and “Bess, you is my woman.” Performed in English.

The Atlanta Opera Studio Touring Show
The Pirates of Penzance

The Atlanta Opera also offers educational opportunities for younger children through our annual Studio Touring Production. Designed to travel for performances in public and private school settings, these interactive productions are a fun way for elementary students to experience opera!

Meet Frederic, Mabel, and the rest of this merry cast of characters as romance blossoms, loyalty is put to the test, and mistakes are forgiven. This interactive adaptation of the classic Gilbert & Sullivan work will introduce your students to opera in a fun and exciting way! Your students will play multiple roles as the chorus of rollicking pirates, carefree wards and timid police constables.
  • Booking includes 45 min pre-performance workshop with the student cast
  • Educational prep materials (including tutorial CD) correspond directly with Georgia Performance Standards in English Language Arts & Reading, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science!

Opera Workshops

Opera Workshops offer students a more intimate "hands-on" opera experience. Designed for a classroom of students, the workshops allow extensive interaction between students and artists. Workshops may feature a singer and accompanist, directors, set and costume designers, or other professionals who contribute to a production. Workshops are tailored to meet the needs of a particular class/group and curriculum and are available year-round for schools, camps, youth groups, etc.

Opera Trunks

Opera Trunks provide opera-related resources for the classroom, after-school programs, and youth groups. Each Trunk contains both a DVD and CD recording of the featured opera. They also feature additional books, CDs, activities and costume/prop elements which can make opera come alive for students while weaving its study throughout the various classroom subjects. Trunks can be used by one or several teachers during the rental period. Each trunk features a study guide to help teachers explore and utilize the resources it contains. 2010-2011 Trunks will feature Verdi's Aida and Mozart's The Magic Flute.

Opera Family Day

Opera Family Day is a fun event for young children and families to learn about and celebrate opera. Best for children PreK - Grade 3.
Activities include:
  • Performances of The Pirates of Penzance

  • Interactive costume shop
  • Stage combat demonstrations
  • Stage makeup demonstrations
  • Crafts

High School Opera Institute (HSOI)

Calling high school voice students in grades 10 -12! Are you considering a career in music? Would you like to expand your knowledge of opera, hone your skill as a performer and work with opera professionals?

Be a part of The Atlanta Opera High School Opera Institute! 

Participants will attend monthly workshops and coaching sessions led by leading professionals in the music field. Topics include Preparing and Auditioning for a Role; Selecting a Music School; Characterization; Diction; and Vocal Classes. Participants will also be invited to attend working Atlanta Opera rehearsals throughout the season, and will showcase their work on a culminating spring concert.

Program runs October 2010 - May 2011 

Application deadline September 7, 2011. Selected applicants will be invited to audition on Sunday, September 19, 2011. Audition will consist of a song in English and Italian song – both must be memorized. Individuals may also be asked to sing major scales or tonal memory exercises. Accompanist will be provided.


Arts Administration Internships

Did you know that The Atlanta Opera offers arts administration internships for college students and recent graduates? The Atlanta Opera internships are designed to connect the learning goals of our interns to hands-on experiences and training in the field of arts administration. The Atlanta Opera internships are unpaid, however interns may earn college credit. The Atlanta Opera strives to make the internship a valuable and meaningful experience for college students and recent graduates. Interns gain a wide range of experience working in each of the company's departments including education, marketing, development, and production. Atlanta Opera interns are also provided with professional development training workshops, networking opportunities, guest speakers, presentations by department heads, and employee discount on Shop Opera merchandise. Interns are accepted for fall, spring, and summer semesters. To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume to Emmalee Iden, Education Manager.

Technical Theatre Internships

Technical theater apprenticeships are offered during the company's season for high school theater students (upper-level) and college/university students majoring in theater, or students with a strong interest in technical aspects of the performing arts. The Atlanta Opera technical theater apprenticeship provides students the opportunity to observe working rehearsals and shadow the Production Stage Manager during a select performance. Apprentices are selected for each of the company's mainstage productions. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
