REQUIREMENTS

  • Live performance experience
  • Training in stage combat
  • Ability to lift and press at least 60 pounds

The Atlanta Opera is embarking on one of the most thrilling chapters in its history, and we’re searching for a visionary, relationship‑driven Director of Advancement Philanthropy to help lead the way. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will play a pivotal role in propelling our capital campaign forward and realizing a new facility that will break the boundaries of opera to bring exceptional experiences to audiences everywhere.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Director of Advancement Philanthropy (DAP) will partner with the Director of Advancement Revenue as part of our unified patron-engagement model to lead the philanthropic strategy and execution, ensuring a seamless and holistic experience across marketing, ticketing, and philanthropy. The role will require close collaboration with the General & Artistic Director, the Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and senior leadership, guiding a talented development team to deepen major donor relationships and drive contributed revenue to support ambitious artistic and organizational goals.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties in addition to other duties as assigned

  • Lead strategy and implementation of annual giving, major gifts, campaigns, and legacy programs
  • Partner with the Director of Advancement Revenue, the General & Artistic Director, and Board leadership on long term Advancement strategy and planning
  • Manage and mentor the fundraising team to achieve excellence across all fundraising activities
  • Use data-driven insights to forecast revenue, identify opportunities, and strengthen donor engagement
  • Build, steward, and solicit a portfolio of major donors
  • Oversee all institutional philanthropic relationships, grants, and deliverables
  • Oversee Advancement Operations to ensure compliance, record keeping, reporting accuracy, data analysis, and strong operational infrastructure for all Advancement efforts

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of progressive fundraising leadership, including managing comprehensive development programs
  • 8+ years of supervisory experience with a track record of building strong teams
  • Strategic thinker with strong budgeting, communication, and relationship‑building skills
  • Experience leading major campaigns or complex fundraising initiatives
  • Facility with CRM systems (Tessitura preferred) and proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Bachelor’s degree required; knowledge of opera or performing arts is a plus

POSITION SUMMARY

The New Works and Community Engagement Manager support the planning and implementation of new works initiatives and community engagement programming at The Atlanta Opera. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this role works collaboratively with departments across the company to coordinate projects, support artists and partners, and ensure the smooth execution of programs and events.

A primary responsibility of this position is coordinating the New Opera Works Festival, which aims to nurture emerging creative talents from under-represented communities and offers a path into the art of opera. The Festival features two signature events: a premiere of a new chamber opera and the 96-Hour Opera Project competition showcase. The Manager assists with project logistics, artist coordination, communications, and program administration, helping ensure that initiatives are well organized and effectively delivered.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and collaborative, with strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

New Works & Festival Management

  • Manage all phases of the New Opera Works Festival, including planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation.
  • Oversee the 96-Hour Opera Project as a core component of the Festival, including application, adjudication, residency, and performance processes.
  • Manage relationships and negotiations with composers, librettists, directors, and rights holders.
  • Track Festival and new works budgets and collaborate with the Chief of Staff on forecasting and financial oversight.
  • Manage and track rights for new works.
  • Prepare regular reports and updates for senior leadership on the status, outcomes, and impact of new works initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Chief of Staff to draft and manage new works agreements.
  • Research and cultivate emerging composers, librettists, and creative collaborators.

Community Engagement & Ancillary Programming

  • Plan and manage community engagement initiatives and programs.
  • Coordinate ancillary programming such as talkbacks, workshops, panels, lectures, and community-based events that enhance access and audience understanding.
  • Collaborate with Education, Artistic, Marketing, and Development teams to align engagement programming with organizational priorities.
  • Serve as a liaison between artists, community partners, and internal stakeholders for engagement initiatives.
  • Support evaluation, data collection, and impact reporting for community engagement and ancillary programming.

Communications, Marketing & Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Communications to develop press releases, editorial content, and messaging related to the New Opera Works Festival and engagement initiatives.
  • Work with Marketing & Audience Development to promote Festival events, ancillary programming, and new works activities.
  • Collaborate on podcasts, film projects, and digital engagement initiatives as assigned.
  • Create, distribute, and analyze surveys and assessment tools for programs and events.
  • Project manage special initiatives and cross-departmental projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Patron Services Coordinator collaborates closely with the Patron Services Manager (PSM) to deliver outstanding customer service to all patrons of the Atlanta Opera. This role involves managing ticketing operations, addressing patron inquiries and issues, and supporting front-of-house activities during events. The Patron Services Coordinator ensures a seamless and enjoyable experience for all visitors, contributing to the overall success and reputation of the Atlanta Opera.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties in addition to other duties as assigned.

  • Handle ticketing operations of the Box Office including fulfillment of ticket orders, creating and maintaining patron accounts, handling in person inquiries, will call, and ticketing troubleshooting
  • Promptly and courteously address patron ticketing problems and requests, in line with company policies.
  • Manage ticketing issues during performances at the Mainstage Box Office, including sales, lost tickets, unsatisfactory seats, last-minute exchanges, and ticket donations.
  • Assist front-of-house operations during events, including managing will-call tickets and supporting crowd management.
  • Maintain a well-organized and efficient box office area, ensuring supplies are stocked and systems are operational.
  • Process and distribute both physical and electronic tickets according to established procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection and privacy regulations in handling customer information.
  • Complete special projects assigned by the PSM.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years in box office/ticketing and customer service preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with Tessitura or other ticketing software preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required. Adobe Acrobat experience is a plus. Ability to quickly learn new software programs.
  • Work Schedule: Position requires late and irregular working hours, including evenings and weekends, particularly during the opera season.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods (up to and over eight hours per day). Ability to communicate effectively using a phone and headset.
  • Safety: Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner.

Supernumeraries are non-speaking, non-singing roles in opera, similar to extras in movies. Casting needs vary per production. The Atlanta Opera accepts supernumerary applications any time.
