In our third annual holiday concert, eight selected soloists from The Atlanta Opera Chorus will be performing at All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Reality TV with an Operatic Twist

By Ellen Sturgill Staying up all night can do some funny things to a person, and we here at The Atlanta Opera would like to share all the hilarity that ensued at the 24-Hour Opera Project! Participants in the event had to either stay up all night, or rehearse for hours to complete their opera scenes in the 24-hour period, and we captured the creative processes of our five teams through our “Confession Cam.”  Think of it as “reality TV meets Verdi.” As the weekend […]

Jumping back to 1999 with Jocelyn Dorsey on WSB’s fantastic People 2 People segment. She spoke with Matthew Lau and Kevin Bell who performed in that season’s production of Samson and Delilah. Iconic voices, but the style? What can we say – it was the 90’s. Winter Journey (Winterreise)

Our 2015-16 season opens with a theatrical version of Franz Schubert’s famed song cycle Winter Journey (Winterreise). This opera is a romantic journey that includes two cycles of songs telling the story of unrequited love, written by Schubert in 1827. The piece has the dramatic and emotional effect of a full opera when sung by a great singer and accompanied by a theatrical, visually arresting production. Here’s a bit of what you can expect to see:  This production is essentially an […]

Light and Sound: David Adam Moore Has Something to Say

This season, we open our Discoveries series with Winter Journey (Winterreise). Staying true to the Discoveries mission to find new works and new perspectives, we will bring David Adam Moore to Atlanta to sing the lead role and to serve as production designer of this production. Opera News praised Moore for his “consistent delivery of beauty.” You can expect this, and more, in September. We asked David about his upbringing, his dual role, and how we listen to (and experience) […]

Behind the Scenes: Curt Olds as Major-General Stanley

Bass Curt Olds is a world-renown singer and performer. He’s covered many roles in Gilbert & Sullivan’s greatest works, most recently in our mounting of The Pirates of Penzance. We went backstage with Curt to watch his transformation into the Major-General and to learn more about his process, pre-performance rituals and tips for getting into character. I always hate the process of putting on heavy wigs and makeup for a production, but I love the look afterwards. The adhesive, spirit gum or […]

A town. A slum. Fatal passion. And love.

By Noel Morris Maria de Buenos Aires is a show about a forgotten music, a forgotten dance, and a forgotten people. Cast in the gauzy hues of surrealistic poetry, the show explores the social conditions that gave rise to the tango. Not unlike hip-hop in our own country, the tango was a product of communities in distress. Initially dismissed as vulgar and immoral (dancing in an embrace was considered indecent), the tango followed an unlikely journey, traveling from the slums […]
